Building a Small Business: Lessons Learned

I'm a photographer. I did not think I'd be sitting here writing HTML code, but here I am.

I have been taking photographs since I was a kid with a disposable plastic Kodak camera. In high school, I learned how to develop film. Now I'm learning how to build a website.

A Constant Learning Journey

I'm going to be honest with you, I am building this site to save money on a pricey business website builder subscription. The learning curve here is pretty steep, but I have learned how to use Lightroom Classic, how to use Quickbooks online, and how to pilot a DJI Air 3s drone. I have learned so much on this small business journey and what I have to show for it is a collection of skills, some of them unexpected, that I have honed over the course of this journey.

The thing I love most about being a small business owner is that I get to learn new things all the time. I have to be a marketer, a salesperson, a customer service rep, a bookkeeper, and a website designer. It's a lot of hats to wear, but it's also incredibly rewarding to see the fruits of my labor in the form of happy clients and beautiful photographs.

Making It All Come Together

Running a successful small business is like building a house from the ground up. You start with a vision, lay a foundation, and then add walls, a roof, and all the finishing touches. Along the way, you encounter all kinds of unexpected challenges: a leaky pipe, a power outage, raccoons...

"A small business is a constant work in progress."

But you adapt and keep building. The end result is something that is uniquely yours, built with your own hands and reflecting your own vision.
